SP on bank account ? (2)

11 February 2022 at 1:45PM in

Trying to fill in an accounts form for 83yr old. I know PC means pension credits, but don't know what 'Sp' means (a higher total). (I know she receives attendance allowance, (which is not on statement ) and she is a widow. Besides wanting to know what 'Sp' means, is it an accumulative of benefits combining a variety ? (e.g. deceased husbands serps ? attendance allowance ? )

I would expect SP to mean State Pension. Depending on her total income she may also be receiving Pension Credit to take her up to the minimum income requirement.

Thank you for replying. I also presumed it was 'state pension' BUT knowing she's only worked for max 20yrs ( and less, due to childcare (in those days) etc. hence husbands pension used to be involved for the 'couple' ) there is NO way the total is state pension (total far exceeds that of state pension) . (I worked for the DWP, but not in the pensions part, and know therefore it isn't state pension) that's why I wondered if it was a combination of deceased husbands + attendance allowance ?

State Pension may be paid at longer intervals i.e. it's the amount due for 4 weeks?

Unless anyone has any brainwaves from what's been shared thus far, the best bet will probably be to do one or more of:

    1. Ask DWP
    2. Check through her correspondence and other documentation for info about her entitlements
    3. Post more specific details about the payments (values, frequencies, full descriptions, etc) on here

I notice that SP can also mean single payment or special payments as well as State Pension.

If she is receiving AA but it is not shown on the bank statement to which you refer, does she have another bank/BS account? It must be going somewhere!

The State Pension normally shows the recipient's NI number against the payment.

BUT knowing she's only worked for max 20yrs

If she is a widow, she may well be receiving inherited full basic and Additional State Pension.

It is possible for AP to be not far short of £180 a week - (this would be for a relatively high earning individual who had never been contracted out).

Do you have access to the statement of increase in benefits that she would have received around last March (or possibly as early as February)?

Thank you SO much Xylophone, what you have posted, is actually where I have got up to, but could get no further.
As the initial question was,"what does 'SP' mean on a statement". As we have a form to fill in, and it does not have that option on.
info: PC and Sp are paid EVERY week. (Sp = £279 every week this does pay for services that she needs)
We only have access to the recent bank statement. (awkward getting access to previous, at the moment).
I did wonder where the Attendance Allowance payments were on the statement, that's why I wondered if they had combined them (though feel that is strange, having myself previous access to 'the dwp comp. system" on peoples records (NO personal access is allowed at the dwp, sackable offence, only access to customers at the time of call).
Speaking to DWP would have problems for gaining access (obviously).
We are 'sorting out finances' for her, without her input, (no funny business, I can assure you ! to save her from stress) to make sure everything is in order for her.
I did find out today (below) about surviving spouse (for anyone else that needs the info):
    (unable to post link here)

If they died on or after 6 October 2002, the maximumSERPSpension and State Pension top up you can inherit depends on their date of birth.

Man’s date of birth Woman’s date of birth Maximum % of SERPS and State Pension top up you can inherit
    5 October 1937 or before 5 October 1942 or before 100%

State pension is normally shown on bank statements with something along the lines of:

Bank giro credit [person's NI number] DWP SP [long reference number]

If you've not got any of that showing on her statement, then I don't think it is state pension - but could be wrong, given her age. Perhaps that was all the DWP used to put on bank statements? Anyone aged 80+ able to confirm, please?

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

My Dad’s (who is 93) shows as his NI Number, DWP SP for his state pension. For his attendance allowance it’s the same but AA instead of SP.
